7 Free Storytelling Apps for Kids

There are many ways to boost your kid’s creativity and fantasy. One of the best things you can do is storytelling. It allows your kid to be involved in the process and make up characters and plot twists.

However, it might be even more interesting to use an application for storytelling. It will make the process faster and funnier.

By the way, if you were looking for some alphabet learning apps, take a look at this article.

Inventeca: kids’ storytelling

This app can be your tool to help your little kids talk more. Dive into the fantasy worlds made by your kids and explore them together.

How does it work? The process itself consists of a few simple steps:

  1. Choose your first wordless story and start it.
  2. Go through the main parts of this story (the parts are represented by pictures) and unleash your fantasy.
  3. You can record your kids telling a story. There is a special built-in functionality to synchronize their voices and the picture that is being displayed.
  4. Once you have finished the story, you can save the record and share it with others.

The amount of stories available in Inventeca is impressive. However, if you want to use it for free, only 2 stories will be unlocked. You will have to buy new stories additionally.

The developers try to add a new story every month, enriching the app.

Imagistory

This is a beautiful app to develop your kid’s fantasy and creativity. Not only does it allow you to make stories, but it also provides you with a picturesque design full of cartoon-like images.

This app was created for children who are 3 years old and up, meaning the stories they can create are not too long and complicated. The stories are wordless; it works like this: your kid gradually unlocks the pictures and makes up a story of his own.

Please note that the app was developed for iPad, meaning it can look strange on other devices.

Unfortunately, the number of features is limited. If you need to unlock new stories, you have to pay for each one. Overall, there are 6 stories available at the moment.

Another downside is the size of the app. It requires almost 100 MB of memory, even though the functionality isn’t too rich.

Story Dice – Storytelling

This app is a bit different from the others listed here. It consists of dice with images. In fact, you need to roll the dice and make up a story by looking at the pictures. This is more interesting than just opening different images, because with the dice, the process gets more unpredictable.

To roll the dice, shake your device. If you need to change the background to see the pictures better, you can do it in the settings.

However, the pictures on the dice are quite abstract, so it might be too hard for little kids to play Story Dice. This is why we would recommend this app for kids who are at least 6 years old.

Story Dice is free with ads on the App Store.

Puppet Pals

This app isn’t actually a storytelling tool, but it can be used for storytelling as well. Puppet Pals is a kind of digital theater, a unique self-made animation.

To get started, choose the character you want to see in your story. It can be only one or all of them; it’s up to you. Then drag the characters you need to the digital stage.

The second step is choosing the background. There are several options to choose from, be it a castle or forest.

Then your story begins. Start imagining and telling what’s going on on the stage. You can record it if you want and watch your play later.

Another cool feature is that you can upload your own photos and use them as a background as well as characters. It makes the decorations 100% customizable!

Unfortunately, there are some limitations connected to Puppet Pals. It was developed for iPad only.

Hellosaurus is the best solution if you want your kids to develop speaking skills and enrich their vocabulary. It is an interactive platform where kids can unleash their imagination and create stories.

The best features of Hellosaurus are the following:

  • Interactive stories. They unfold as a series. At first, your kid will have a passive role as a listener and watcher. But a few series further, he or she becomes a real author and changes the plot. This feature allows you to develop a full set of skills, such as watching, listening, logical thinking, and imagination.
  • Personalized app. It means the features are created by real experts in learning, and the app content can change depending on your child’s progress.
  • Ad-free content. This is great not to be distracted by loud ads popping out of nowhere.

Toontastic 3D

Here comes a slightly different application. It isn’t a typical storytelling app. In fact, with Toontastic 3D, you can create an interactive movie. This is more interesting than just describing pictures.

This is why you should try Toontastic 3D:

  • There are almost no limitations. You can unfold the story the way you want. Drag and move characters and make up a story.
  • Choose the cast of characters that will be present in your cartoon.
  • You can comment on each action you are doing. Your voice will be recorded.
  • Save your cartoon and watch it later.

There are some disadvantages. The faces of the characters don’t seem to change, regardless of what scene is taking place. The characters keep smiling all the time, even if the moment is sad according to the story.

Storywriter

This app is actually a game, but it will also develop storytelling skills as well, so it deserves to be mentioned here. There are some great features you might enjoy with your kids:

  1. Choose the characters and start a story. You can pick a background as well.
  2. Use your imagination to create an interesting story and tell it. The number of endings is limited, but what exactly will happen next depends on your choices through the game.
  3. Try a puzzle game. If your kid can read, this feature might come in quite handy.

The application is free with some ads. Another cool thing about Storywriter is frequent updates, meaning all the bugs are fixed often and updates are released regularly.

At the moment, Storywriter is available on Google Play only.
