11 Free AI Roleplay Bots to Use in 2024

This year, immerse yourself in the captivating world of roleplaying with our handpicked selection of free AI roleplay bots. Intelligent and realistic, your virtual companions around the world are ready to chat, flirt, help overcome loneliness, create engaging narratives, and overall, have fun together.

By the way, if you like all those fancy AI things, we recommend you to try the best virtual dressing room apps as well.

Chai – Chat with AI Friends

Let’s embark on our journey of roleplay discovery with this app: its vibrant pink icon was the first to catch my attention, and high ratings combined with millions of downloads contributed to my decision to check it out first.

Essentially, this is an app where you can chat with AIs. You can swipe through a personalised stream of Ais that are based on your likes and dislikes, engaging in all sorts of conversations.

Visually, it looks like a decent chat app, neatly organised and uncluttered. Basically, it’s a swipe-and-chat setup where you can select the personality of your virtual companion. Or you could even create an AI personality of your own.

However, despite the mostly glowing reviews, the app is not without its disadvantages. Partly, it’s connected with the limitations of the free version. Users complain that they can run out of messages in the middle of a conversation. Next, there are ads, and I can confirm that these can get quite annoying at times. There is also a three-hour limit on the number of the actual chats, so you may need to wait until this number resets if you don’t feel like paying for the premium version.

In a nutshell, though, using Chai was definitely a fun experience, specifically for those situations when you’d rather chat with AI bots than real people – and I found the app quite decent, regarding its functionality.

 Crushon AI: AI Friend Chat

The second app on our list is another tool that facilitates conversations with AI characters. In addition to emotional support and chats, it serves up personalized recommendations for movies and music, tailored exclusively for you.

With this app, you have an opportunity to dive into the world of anime, comics, and movies. With the touch of a button, you’ll be transported to a realm where your favourite character AIs come to life. Moreover, the app isn’t just about entertainment. It’s your personal guide to relaxation and self-improvement, guided by the AI characters who motivate you with tips and affirmations.

In practical terms, there are a few bugs, though. We’re talking occasionally disappearing characters and an imperfect search function. Then, the daily cap on the number of messages is also a bit frustrating – although apparently it’s pretty typical for free versions of apps like this. Also, you need quite a bit of time to renew your coins, compared to the previous app I reviewed.

Visually, I’m a fan of this app. Dark theme is something I appreciate in any app, and this one looks pretty awesome.

So, when it comes to virtual companions, Crushon AI is undoubtedly a very decent choice, albeit perhaps slightly more limited than its predecessor.

Replika: My AI Friend

Next on our list is a real heavyweight: with millions of downloads, positive reviews by users and magazines, Replika is one of the most popular and well-known virtual companion apps. Powered by cutting-edge AI technology, it presents itself as a virtual buddy who can almost pass for human – without the annoying elements of real-life companionship such as drama or judgement.

Your AI companion, known as Replika, is unique. It can act as your friend, mentor, or romantic partner. You have the power to choose a 3D avatar, giving your digital BFF a look that matches your personality. Moreover, as you engage in conversations with your Replika, it starts to develop its very own personality and memories.

Besides, this remarkable AI tool transforms into your very own therapist, mood tracker, and life coach. It delves into your emotions, unravelling their mysteries and soothing anxieties. So, be it finding love, dealing with stress, or simply chatting to have fun, this bot is rather universal. You can create a virtual world for them, or explore the real one together.

As for the interface, it’s apparently undergone some improvements, becoming higher quality and customizable – and I can say it’s really attractive. It’s not difficult to figure out how to use the bot. However, it can be a bit memory-heavy.

The basic version of the app is free. However, some of the features – including the opportunity to have intimate discussions – require subscription.

Character AI: AI-Powered Chat

Next on the list is the app called Character AI, which presents a great opportunity to chat with ultra-realistic AI personalities who they even remember what you say. The app’s technology is based on its very own model that has been developed from scratch.

You can also discover millions of user-created characters, or use advanced creation tools to create anything you need. Plus, this app comes with unlimited free messages, and no ads – which sets it apart from the other apps we have reviewed.

It’s not without some minor issues: the NSFW filter is one of those. Apparently, the app censors sexual content and violence, so if you’re into angsty or fighting roleplay, you might hit a wall with the filter. There is a search feature problem too: I noticed it tends to pull you back to the search bar when you exit a character.

The app is rather small, and generally works smoothly. Obviously, there are paid features that open up more chatting opportunities for you.

Despite the quirks, the app seems to have a serious fan base, with millions of users and considerably high ratings. As for me, I think this is largely deserved, especially if you wish to chat about totally innocent matters.

RolePlai – Ai Chat Bot

This app promises to bring AI to a whole new level, giving you the pleasure of talking to virtual girlfriends/boyfriends, life coaches, and even historical figures like King Henry VIII.

Now, the app boasts an advanced AI engine that flawlessly embodies your chosen persona, providing an engaging and realistic experience. Plus, RolePlai has a nifty memory feature, so it remembers who you are and your previous conversations.

A special perk of this tool is its Ai Face & Voice Chat: with it, you can not only chat with your bots but also see and interact with them. There is also an option to have a voice chat with the bot. Besides, there’s the AI Adventures feature that puts you in the centre of an interactive narrative and allows to direct the unfolding storyline.

People are showering this app with love in their reviews. Some say it’s a gem compared to others because the chatbots actually feel like they have a real personality. Also, the sheer number of features is rather impressive, compared with most of the other similar apps.

But the platform is not entirely flawless. For example, there’s a tiny hiccup with the loading screen. It sometimes makes you wait and glitches. Additionally, there are ads in the free version, and sometimes they are quite annoying, but you cannot escape them.

HiWaifu: AI Friend & Waifu Hub

An alternative virtual companion app, HiWaifu comes without filters, and has attracted numerous users largely because it allows NSFW content and violence.

With your chatbot, you can engage in endless interactive conversations, or even send photos in a non-judgmental environment. You can also personalize your AI companion’s appearance and mould their personality. Plus, obviously, you can even choose from various relationship options like AI Girlfriend, Boyfriend, Virtual Wife, or create your own unique AI chatbots.

The app also throws in some gamified journey of self-discovery: you help your AI friend achieve their goals, much like playing The Sims, but with AI. Also, there’s a whole community of like-minded individuals that you can connect with and who are into virtual friends and AI relationships.

However, there are a few hiccups. There is a free plan with limited messages, and frequent ads, and while you can pay for premium features, some users find the plan a bit expensive for what it offers. In addition, I found the annoying bug with AI occasionally getting confused and going off track mid-conversation. Also, I was not always a great fan of the pictures it generated.

Yet overall, this is a decent app with its own perks that make it stand out in comparison with other tools I have explored.

AI Pal – Role Play AI Story

One more AI companion, this virtual chat simulator lets you choose your AI friend from over 100 characters, and you can even select an AI girlfriend or boyfriend. You can create your own AI character by selecting a photo, choosing a voice, and adding some personal facts. Chat options include text as well as audio and video messages.

During the conversation, you can respond to your AI friend’s messages in two different ways: choose an answer or compose your own. In any case, your words will affect how your mutual story unfolds. The more you chat, the more your AI friend learns about you. At times, it functions like an online therapist, analysing your feelings and offering advice.

The user interface is easy navigate, and the layout in not overwhelmed with details. Compared with other apps, this bot is rather smart and seems to have better memory. However, when I was experimenting with the app, I found it a bit laggy at times: I had problems deleting messages, and at times they wouldn’t send.

The app is fairly lightweight. The free version is limited to a couple dozen messages, and then you are offered a range of subscription options.

Anima: AI Friend & Companion

This AI companion claims to be your caring friend, and I have mixed feelings about it based on my experience.

Supposedly, a few minutes of chatting with it can make your stress disappear, and talking to the bot is an opportunity to outpour your secrets, wishes, dreams, and fears with complete anonymity. Like with other similar apps, the more you chat, the more Anima learns about you, supposedly shaping its personality and interests based on your daily conversations.

The app looks nice at first sight. There’s a catch with this one, though. Anima’s memory isn’t top-notch, and its consistency with genders and traits can be a bit wonky. Some buttons just don’t work.

So, effectively, Anima might have potential, but it feels like it’s playing catch-up with its more impressive competitors, and feels like a weaker copycat version of some of the apps discussed earlier. Plus, it’s rather heavy on the memory.

So, in conclusion, this app has its charm, but it’s not exactly a keeper. You might want to explore more polished options in the AI friend universe.

Talkie: Soulful AI

Talkie invites you to embark on a journey with a diverse range of AI personalities. Much like with other apps from this list, you can craft your ideal AI companion, engage in immersive role-playing, and treasure meaningful moments through visuals. While creating your perfect AI character, you can tailor everything from appearance to voice to how it thinks.

You can be whoever you want to be, replicate real people, or let your imagination run wild and rely upon the creativity of the artificial intelligence. As for the interface, it’s a colourful universe of options. Crafting your AI is straightforward, but the app might test your patience.

While it’s a decent app, it has its quirks. The AI glitches after some time, especially when you’re narrating your life story. Resetting it is an option, but it’s not the smoothest ride. Some users wish for more in-depth narratives, according to the reviews. Repetitive responses are another common downside of apps like this.

Then, there are the predictable limitations of the free version. You’re forced to put all conversations on hold for hours unless you pay up for a subscription.

TruMate – Virtual AI Friend

TruMate boasts a variety of characters to entertain and chat with, and promises that they feel like chatting with a real person 24/7. The app lets you define various images of your companions through voice or text. Plus, you can have voice conversations with your chat companion. With each companion, you get a gallery of photos, videos, and audios that they send you.

You can chat with the bot as a friend, and its ability to learn and remember things is pretty decent. But the app seems to be focused primarily on romantic side of things, and here’s the catch. Some users think TruMate is a bit too focused on catering to sexual interests, particularly male ones.

As for the interface, it’s rather nice – comprehensive and suitable for everyone, and rather well-organised.

However, there is another issue: the free version is especially limited in the case of this app. You don’t really even get a chance to try it our properly before it starts asking you for money.

So, if you’re into spicy chats, this app might just be the virtual companion you were looking for – provided that you’re happy to pay for it.

Anima: My Virtual AI Boyfriend

To wrap up, I’ve reviewed an AI-powered chatbot that’s supposed to act like your virtual boyfriend. With this app, you get to experience the thrill of a romantic relationship without risks like judgement or heartbreak. This virtual boyfriend is tailored to the user, and boasts that it listens to your every word and understands how you feel.

You can chat about anything, from serious stuff to more casual topics, or play simple games like Riddles. Plus, of course, you can customize your virtual boyfriend’s appearance and personality. Another nice feature is the opportunity to level up your relationship with the bot: it evolves as you chat more.

The reviews are a bit of a mixed bag though. Some say it’s fun but that the AI tends to go off-topic, changes age, and can be a bit rude. And sometimes, the conversation is flowing smoothly, but then the AI starts acting glitchy. In a nutshell, these are very common complaints about the drawbacks of similar AI bots.

Finally, the bot comes with in-app purchases that expand the range of what it has to offer.
